Hackney Council grants planning permission for Colville Estate in London

The 140-year old Langham is embarking on a massive refurbishment to reinforce its reputation for elegance and style. Blending the hotel's history with the demands of today's guests is designer David Collins' biggest challenge, reports Jim Banks.

Hackney Council in the UK has granted planning permission for the construction of two hexagonal buildings in the London borough of Hackney.

The residential project named Colville Towers will be built on the Colville Estate next to Shoreditch Park in Hackney, East London.

The project is the third phase of Hackney Council’s regeneration plan for the area.

Following a competition in 2012, the Hackney Council Estate Regeneration Team selected London-based David Chipperfield Architects and Karakusevic Carson Architects to prepare the tower designs.

One tower will be 16-storeys high and the other 21-storeys. The hexagonal towers will form a gateway to the estate from the corner of Shoreditch Park and also house 198 apartments.

The floor plan designs provide an option of three to six units per storey and large balconies with views on three sides.

"The hexagonal towers will form a gateway to the estate from the corner of Shoreditch Park and also house 198 apartments."

Ground floors of the towers will each hold a lobby and a café. The residence will offer a mix of one and two-bed apartments and three-bed penthouses with private terraces, as well as a one-storey basement for parking 39 cars.

The council will sell the apartments to generate funds for redeveloping the estate and to meet its plan of building 438 affordable homes.

Karakusevic Carson Architects partner Paul Karakusevic was quoted by dezeen as saying: "It has been a fantastic collaboration; the buildings form a vital part of the Colville master plan, creating a natural entrance to the newly regenerated neighbourhood."

Hackney Council is currently looking for a developer to build the towers.
