Property development firm Hammerson has secured approval from Southampton City Council in the UK for its £70m Watermark WestQuay mixed-use scheme in Southampton.
The 88,500m² scheme will transform the currently underused area in the city centre near the existing Watermark WestQuay shopping centre.

Designed by ACME, the scheme will be delivered in two phases, with the first phase featuring a 15-screen cinema, 15 restaurants and a new public plaza.
Phase two will include development of a residential tower, a hotel, office space, restaurants, additional public space and gardens.
ACME said its proposal aims to ‘mend the dysfunctional urban fabric’ and lack of access by bridging the existing level difference between the Old Town and the site by introducing two sloped promenades leading onto the new plaza.
After completion, the development will feature pedestrian routes from the Old Town to Watermark WestQuay and beyond to Harbour Parade as well as the waterfront.

By GlobalDataHammerson development manager Guy Wells said the site offers an opportunity to transform a brownfield site and will ensure that Southampton continues to provide residents and visitors with a better retail and leisure offer in the city centre.
“We have been extremely encouraged by the support we have received during the planning process and following the determination of the application we will now begin work on our detailed designs for the first phase,” Wells said.
Barton Wilmore is providing planning advice on the project, which is part of a series of major developments planned in the city with over £800m investment in the next few years.
