Urban planning project in China

Architectural firm Hassell together with the Urban Planning and Design Institute of Shenzhen (UPDIS), has secured a deal for an urban planning project in China.

The deal involves creating a conceptual plan for a 340ha site located within the Qianhai Zone, known as the Qianhai Hong Kong – Shenzhen Modern Service Co-operative Zone Key precincts.

Hassell said that Shenzhen Qianhai Zone is a special new economic zone that will serve as an experimental business area for better interaction between China and Hong Kong in the financial, logistics and IT service sectors.

The Qianhai Zone is expected to complete in 25 years.

The winning concept includes a structured green connectors framework for the port with a plan to construct shipping headquarters and services in the future.

Plans also include creation of a future green wedge for transformation of the waterfront into a recreational area.

Hassell said the spatial planning will ensure that Qianhai will be opened up to the ocean economy. The Hassell and UPDIS concept is said to be only precinct in Qianhai facing the ocean.

Hassell chairman Peter Duncan said that the special economic zone in Shenzhen is one of the important development zones in Southern China.

"The winning HASSELL concept combines our experience and thinking about the design of China’s new liveable green cities with a Chinese cultural quality," Duncan said.
