US-based architecture firm HOK has been selected as lead architect for the £165m Papworth Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in the UK.

HOK will work in collaboration with Skanska on the project, which is the preferred bidder and responsible for design, build, finance, operations and maintenance.

The 75-year old Papworth Hospital was originally located at Addenbrooke’s in the city of Cambridge, but is to be freshly built on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The 310-bed facility will serve as the country’s largest cardiothoracic hospital and the main heart and lung transplant centre in the UK.

"The hospital’s design aims to reduce stress and anxiety among patients and family through its easy-to-navigate environment…with open green spaces surrounding the building."

It will provide patients with immediate access to a range of services and also help attract clinicians and researchers.

The hospital’s design aims to reduce stress and anxiety among patients and family through its easy-to-navigate environment, gardens, restaurant and parkland setting with open green spaces surrounding the building.

Each inpatient floor of the hospital will include two nursing units, so that patients are always within the sight of nurses.

The hospital’s double corridor design reduces travel distances and provides nurses with direct sightlines to all patients.

HOK London healthcare regional leader Allison Wagner said: "Our design integrates the latest technology with flexible, functional space to create an extraordinary facility that will deliver a best-in-class patient experience while providing an ideal workspace for staff.

"We are honoured to bring our international healthcare experience to the project and to create a new global benchmark for cardiothoracic hospital design."

The design of the new hospital leaves 118,000ft² space for future expansion of the hospital.

Construction of the new hospital was originally planned to begin in late 2012, but a series of delays had cut short the plan.

The Papworth Hospital is now scheduled to open in 2017.
