Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum is set to re-open on 24 April, following the completion of its $63m renovation programme carried out by US-based architectural firm Populous.

Under the renovation programme, the 75 year old building received new elevated public concourses, amenities and additional event spaces, with the buildings’ architectural details kept intact.

Populous senior principal Charlie Smith said the Fairgrounds Coliseum is a landmark building in Indianapolis and the renovations were needed to honour the building’s legacy as well as modernise it to better accommodate events.

"The improvements to the Fairgrounds Coliseum are rooted in a real need to accommodate the evolving needs of fans, athletes, performers and exhibitors."

"The new Fairgrounds Coliseum preserves the most notable elements of the building but now provides a more immersive experience with the latest technology, video boards, dramatic sound systems and smoother back-of-house operations," Smith said.

Populous restored the cathedral-like glass block windows and upheld the traditional limestone and brick detailing of the original building, and improved the building’s natural lighting.

The elevated public concourses feature separate attendee and servicing functions, which create more room on the event level for smoother operations and immediate access for personnel, rodeo crews, concert staff and sports teams.

The latest technology and newly engineered acoustical designs will ensure that the venue retains a high performance quality.

Populous project manager and principal Kurt Amundsen said the improvements to the Fairgrounds Coliseum are rooted in a real need to accommodate the evolving needs of fans, athletes, performers and exhibitors to create a more viable, attractive venue to enjoy events.
