Construction firm Interserve has secured a contract to renovate five of the nine heritage buildings at the edge of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, UK.

Enabling works for the scheme were completed in 2011 and, under the new deal, Interserve will carry out M&E and dry lining fit-out works.

Interserve said that a big challenge at the development is the complete absence of vehicular access, combined with a drop of over nine storeys from one end of the development to the other.

The buildings planned to be renovated range between sixteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, based on the design provided by Morgan McDonnell Architecture.

Interserve project manager for the scheme Colin Hawkins said that as part of the project an existing six-storey internal structure has been removed.

"We’ve replaced it with a new eight storey version, using hot rolled steel for levels one to five in lieu of timber frame, and a cold rolled super structure for the further three storeys and roof," Hawkins said.

"Interserve will carry out M&E and dry lining fit-out works."

The area was formerly occupied by the City of Edinburgh Council and existing buildings in the site have been renovated and refurbished by various parties.

As per the development, all nine structures will be unified using new render and selecting natural stone, dark grey terracotta cladding, hardwood and zinc for the new building works.

After completion, the scheme is expected to re-energise pedestrian movement across the site and feature roof gardens, terraces, a new square and extensions to the rooftop.

As part of the project, UK-based developer Chris Stewart Group will build a £45m mixed use scheme that will feature 29 serviced apartments, four restaurants, a bar / bistro, offices / retail units and a £25m Motel One hotel with 208 rooms.
