Saudi Arabia-based developer Jabal Omar Development Company has unveiled a $5.3bn project to build ten hotel towers in the province of Makkah in 2013 to accommodate pilgrims.

The project will be developed in five phases and is expected to be completed in five years.

Jabal Omar Development executive general director Sameer Al Quraishi said that the company was established to spend $3.2bn in Makkah and is developing 2.2 million m² of land near the Grand Mosque.

"Saudi Arabia is aiming to increase the number of people who are allowed to perform the annual pilgrimage," Al Quraishi said.

"It’s also mostly trying to accommodate more religious visitors and that will surely increase demand for hotels."

Nesma & Partners will build the first phase of the project, which includes ten towers.

The second phase, which includes four towers, will be built by Baytur Construction and Azmeel Contracting & Construction.

Designs are being drawn for the fourth and five phases with the completion expected in six months.

The 544-acre development site will facilitate 38 hotel towers and a shopping centre.

Hotel properties on the development will be managed by hotel operators Marriott International , Hyatt Hotels , Hilton Hotels and Sheraton.

Upon its completion, the project will add 13,500 rooms to Makkah’s hospitality industry.

The 38 hotels under construction will be managed by 28 companies.

The development, about 300m from the Grand Mosque, will feature a prayer area to host 65,000 worshipers, complete with parking spaces.
