Kent State University in the US has selected the team of Weiss/Manfredi and Richard L. Bowen & Associates to design its new $40m architecture building.

Weiss/Manfredi will serve as lead designer while Richard L. Bowen & Associates will be the architect of record.

The winning team’s concept, known as The Design Loft, beat off competition from three other teams who unveiled their proposed designs in January 2013.

A continuous studio loft will form the core of the structure, while the Design Loft will extend the spaces of the building into the campus.

The new 120,000ft² architecture building will be built along the south side of the university’s Esplanade extension near Kent.

After completion, the new building will unite the architecture school, will which now spread across three buildings across the campus under one roof.

Construction of the architecture building is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2014 while the facility is due to be fully occupied by December 2015.

Kent State University president Lester Lefton said the building will serve as a new home for the university’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design.

Kent State director of design and construction at the Office of the University Architect Michael Bruder said that the next steps in the project will be refining the design idea and developing detailed drawings to ensure that the constructed building serves both the college and the university in the best possible way.

The new architecture building is part of the university’s campus transformation, called "Foundations of Excellence: Building the Future."

The transformation involves the construction of new buildings, facility upgrades and creation of new spaces.
