Kier Construction has secured a £25m contract to restore Glasgow School of Art’s (GSA) Mackintosh Building, which was damaged by fire in May 2014.

Kier will provide full construction management services to deliver the restoration project, which is planned to be structured over two main phases.

The first phase is set to begin in July this year and an external envelope will be created to make the building wind and water-tight. The roofs over the east and west wings will also be replaced and restoration of the west wing and modernisation of the east wing interiors will commence next year.

Mackintosh’s restoration senior project manager Liz Davidson said: "All the companies that bid for this contract provided extremely comprehensive, competitive bids.

"Kier Construction will appoint and manage teams of craft specialists to complete the stained glass and lighting work."

"The final assessment was made on the basis of a 60:40 quality to cost appraisal and the wining tenderer had to strike a fine balance between offering good value and exceptional quality."

As the main contractor, Kier will take up work related to co-ordination of the stone, joinery, electrical and decorative aspects of the reconstruction. The company will collaborate with GSA to appoint and manage teams of craft specialists to complete the stained glass and lighting work, as well as the pulse mechanisms of Mackintosh’s slave and studio clocks.

Kier Construction Scotland’s managing director Brian McQuade said: "The Glasgow School of Art is an internationally recognised building and it’s a huge honour to be working on restoring such a culturally significant project."
