Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture has appointed Landtech Design as the landscape design consultant for the $1.2bn Kingdom Tower project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Kingdom Tower will be over 1km in height and spread across an area of 530,000m².
The tower forms part of the first construction phase of Kingdom City, a 5.3 million m² mixed-use development in north of Jeddah.
The building will feature a hotel, apartments, offices, three lobbies on the upper floors and an observation deck on the 157th floor.
It will also house a high-end shopping mall, additional development parcels that will accommodate commercial and high-density residential buildings and open spaces, including the central tower plaza.
The 161-storey tower will contain 59 elevators, including 54 single-deck and five double-deck elevators, along with 12 escalators.
As per the deal, Landtech will use latest innovations in sustainable irrigation technology to design the Kingdom Tower irrigation system.
Rainwater will be collected by water harvesting efforts to condensate from the building to supply water for irrigating the grounds’ 8.5 acres of green space.
The building’s air conditioners will extract water from the humid Red Sea air and will direct it into a large cistern adjacent to the base of the building.
The irrigation system will feature technologies like UV sanitisation, a fertiliser injection system, weather-based sensors, and a central control system that will allow the entire operation to be controlled remotely.
Upon completion, the tower is expected to be the tallest in the world, about 173m (568ft) taller than the current tallest building, the 828m Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-2017.
