The Government of Oman has appointed UK-based construction firm Mace to provide project and cost management services during the development of the Oman Cultural Complex (OCC) in Muscat.

The OCC is the Ministry of Heritage and Culture-developed concept to establish a national centre of culture and promote local culture and artistic innovations.

Planned to be built in the Airport Heights district of Muscat, the 400,000m² complex will feature a number of institutions of natural cultural interest, including The National Theatre, the National Documents and Archives Authority, the National Library, the Children’s Library, the Literary Forum and the Youth Art Club.

In addition, there will be facilities for a cinema, gallery and workshop, literary society headquarters and lecture hall and retail areas.

The National Library will have the capacity to host five million books, while the National Documents and Archives Authority will act as a four-storey exhibition, public event area and a research and administration wing.

The complex’s National Theatre will have the capacity to accommodate more than one thousand people.

All the structures of the OCC will be clustered under a perforated canopy spread over 40,000m².

The canopy, which is designed and engineered by French engineering firm Setec Bâtiment, curves and distorts according to the geometry and height of the buildings underneath.

Landscaping of the OCC will include the Oasis Fruit Garden, which will be able to accommodate 1,100 palm trees, 750 fruit trees and 32,500 smaller trees and shrubs.

The environmental consultant for the project is Eco-Cités.
