The Miami Beach City Commission in the US has selected architect Rem Koolhaas, who is the founder of OMA, to redesign and redevelop the 52-acre convention centre in Miami Beach, Florida, US.

The architect will work with real estate development firm South Beach ACE.

Koolhaas has created a new design for the site, which includes the convention centre, public parks and green space, a hotel with 800 rooms, shops and restaurants.

After completion, the redevelopment will feature a convention hotel, a front lawn for the revitalised Jackie Gleason Theatre, a plaza for Miami Beach City Hall, a town square, an outdoor arena for the Latin American Cultural Museum and an entryway to the botanical ballroom.

About 50% of the site will consist of open spaces, including lawns, paths, plazas, parks and gardens.

The central square will create a series of connections across the site, including a diagonal to link the Soundscape to the Botanical Gardens and Holocaust Memorial.

A north-south connection will join the Collins Canal to Lincoln Road and a green network of public spaces will bring together all of the nearby neighborhoods, formerly separated by the convention centre.

Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority chairman Jeff Lehman said Koolhaas’ vision for the convention centre will create a new landmark for the region.

"The Miami Beach Convention Center is already a hugely popular destination for some of the biggest events in the world including Art Basel. Considering the scope of the project, the magnificent design of the new Convention Center, and the natural appeal of Miami Beach, we fully expect the level of interest to increase," Lehman said.
