Miami residents have voted in favour of 1,000ft observation tower to be constructed in the middle of downtown.

SkyRise is planned to be build at the end of Bayside Marketplace, an outdoor shopping mall that faces Biscayne Bay. The hairpin-shaped tower will feature an amusement park style ride, a 550ft bungee jump, a ballroom, moving movie theatre and a nightclub.

The tower’s observation deck, which will be built by Montreal-based gsmprjct°, will be the second highest in the US after the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas.

SkyRise project is being led by real estate developer Jeffrey Berkowitz and the construction will cost around $430m.

"I think an iconic structure downtown will firmly cement Miami on the global stage. It’s going to be Miami’s Eiffel Tower."

Berkowitz said: "Miami is a world-class city.

Miami-based Coastal Construction will serve as a general contractor for the SkyRise tower project, as well as Tishman Construction, the builder of the original and new World Trade Centre in New York.

Berkowitz had earlier partnered with General Growth Properties (GWP) and spent around $300,000 on promoting plans with the voters in Miami.

Having secured public approval, developers will now pay $10m to Miami before starting construction works on the project, whereas GWP will spend $27m towards improving the neighbouring outdoor shopping centre.

Construction of the tower foundation is expected to take nine months, while the entire tower is anticipated to be completed by 2018.
