The Municipality of Middelfart on the Danish island Funen has selected a project submitted by construction group 5E Byg for the development of the city centre.

Created in partnership with Henning Larsen Architects, Ramboll and LIW Planning, the project will include constructing a new 8,000m² city hall, apartments covering 6,000m² and a shopping area of 3,000m².

"The building is designed to give employees the best facilities for knowledge sharing across the organisation."

The municipality of Middelfart will own the new city hall, while a private investor and a local consortium will own the shops and apartments. City hall will feature a double-height foyer to house the reception and a service centre, a conference centre and a council hall on the second floor, and will provide views of the Lillebælt strait.

Certified to the DGNB standard, the building is designed to give employees the best facilities for knowledge sharing across the organisation. In addition, the council building will feature an inner atrium space, allowing employees to see each other across the floors and departments.

Municipality of Middelfart committee said: "It is a characteristic building that will strengthen the expression and attractiveness of the city and the building is a beautiful example of contemporary architecture of high quality."

Construction work on the new building is expected to begin in February 2015 and be completed by April 2017.
