The development will feature over 900 apartments across ten new and 16 refurbished sheltered housing schemes in the north east.

The consortium called Solutions for North Tyneside, which includes Equitix and Keepmoat as Miller Construction partners, will carry out the refurbishment and construction work.

Under the 28-year contract, the consortium will also be responsible for cleaning, repair and maintenance works.

Existing developments to be refurbished include Carlton Court, North Shields; Carville House, Wallsend; Cheviot View, West Allotment; Eccles Court, Backworth; Emmerson Court, Shiremoor; Feetham Court, Palmersville; Fernlea, Annitsford; Preston Court, Preston village; Rudyerd Court, North Shields; Skipsey Court, Percy Main; Southgate Court, Longbenton; Tamar Court, North Shields; The Orchard, North Shields; Victoria Court, Cullercoats.

New build schemes include Bisley Court, Battle Hill; Bristol Drive, Battle Hill; Broadway Court, Battle Hill; Chapelville, Seaton Burn; Clifton Court, Whitley Bay; Crummock Court, Howdon; Eldon Court, Willington Quay; Phoenix Court, North Shields; Roseberry Court, Monkseaton; Wallington Court, Marden estate.

Miller Construction chief executive Chris Webster said the company will deliver sheltered accommodation for the residents of North Tyneside under the project.

"In addition to being the largest housing project in the region over the next three years, this project has a number of key community benefits attached to it, including creating up to 500 jobs for the region," Webster said.

North Tyneside Mayor Linda Arkley said the scheme will be a significant construction project for the borough and wider region.

"It will give a big boost to the local economy and I’m delighted that a high proportion of the new jobs being created are for residents in our most deprived wards," Arkley said.

Work is expected to start on site in September 2013 and complete by autumn 2016.
