Construction firm Morgan Sindall has completed a £17.8m project to build a new academic building for the University of Sussex in the UK.

The project has replaced the Russell Building and Arts D and E blocks at the university.

The 8,000m² development includes a 500-seat lecture theatre, both general and specialist teaching rooms, academic and support space, and social and cafe facilities.

The new building will house the School of Law, Politics and Sociology and the School of Business, Management and Economics while the School of Education and Social Work will be located in Essex House.

Morgan Sindall area director David Sershall said, "This new development will provide students at the university with a stimulating, spacious learning environment."

Sustainable features of the building include a sedum roof and rainwater harvesting systems.

During construction, Morgan Sindall removed 50 car-parking spaces in the Silverstone car park (P7) to make space for local contractors’ compound.

A retaining wall which is similar to that in Mantell car park (P6) was constructed around the new parking area.

The new academic building was designed, constructed and operated to high environmental standards in accordance with the university’s Environmental Policy.

The development is the ninth project Morgan Sindall has completed for the university’s Falmer campus.

Morgan Sindall has already constructed the Fulton Building at the university, featuring a three-storey teaching block, lecture theatres and seminar rooms.
