NCC has secured a SEK413m ($61m) contract from Akademiska Hus to construct the new Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Royal College of Music, which has operated in temporary premises for about 55 years, will now move to a new purpose-built home.

After completion, the college will feature a glass entrance on Valhallavägen and concert spaces to host both large and small concerts.

The college will also feature an auditorium with a seating capacity for 700 people.

Akademiska Hus director of Stockholm Region Sten Wetterblad said, "The Stockholm region is developing and, together with the Royal College of Music and NCC, we look forward to commencing construction on this vital project for the university capital of Stockholm."

NCC said the project has started in terms of landscaping and relocating the existing building on the site.

The project features an area of 21,900m², of which about 20,900m² will be new construction.

Akademiska Hus said the buildings at the Royal College of Music will combine with a circular residential block to make up a cohesive city environment where historic buildings as a central feature will interact with the existing structures.

NCC Construction business manager of building department for Stockholm/Mälardalen region Matti Virkki said the company intends to create a modern college with high acoustic standards in the concert spaces, and practice rooms with a good work environment for teachers and students.

The project is expected to be complete by May 2016.
