Crown Place scheme in UK

Ocon Construction has been selected as the preferred bidder for the £50m Crown Place student accommodation scheme at the University of Liverpool in the UK.

Designed by Lewis & Hickey Architects, Crown Place scheme will involve construction of 1,259 student accommodation units in three buildings of seven, nine and ten storeys.

Crown Place scheme will be situated on Brownlow Hill, in the centre of the university’s city campus and will be built on the site of the former veterinary school, which will relocate to a new building after completion of the project.

Ocon will start work on the site in August 2012 by demolishing the existing building and will recycle the fabric of the veterinary school as piling material for the student halls.

The scheme will feature 29 larger studio apartments for occupation by live-in pastoral tutors, and a mix of studios and en-suite bedrooms in clusters of five to eight rooms.

Building one will house retail units on the ground floor, a large social space, games room and laundry built around the scheme’s admin hub, while building two will feature an undercroft car park.

Sustainable elements of the building will be green roofs and a heating system which will run on the spare capacity of the university’s existing district heating infrastructure.

All three buildings will have a concrete frame with a mix of brickwork, curtain walling and GRC cladding.

Upon its completion in August 2014, the scheme will bring the total number of student bedrooms constructed by Ocon for the university to 2,008.

In January 2011, Ocon secured a £35m contract from the University of Liverpool to work on Chatham Street, a student accommodation mixed-use scheme.
