Bordeaux urban development

OMA has been selected by La Fabrique Métropolitaine de la Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux to design a masterplan for a new major urban development in the southern district of Bordeaux, France.

Based on the expansion of the local tram system, the project will forge new connections to Bordeaux’s central station from the neighbourhoods of Bègles and Villenave d’Ornon, playing an important role in their regeneration.

OMA said the masterplan will create a new urban strategy for better integration of the tramline into the region of the city, unlocking the potential for both city development and public space.

The project is part of a plan to create a new identity for the Porte Sud de Bordeaux (Bordeaux south gate).

The masterplan houses two contrasting conditions, which include one fast, the current Route de Toulouse, and one slow, dedicated to pedestrian traffic of the new neighborhood’s inhabitants, which will emerge around the tramline.

OMA associate Clement Blanchet said that the tramway extension will create an opportunity to rebuild part of the city in order to generate a new linear condition that ‘allows the possibility to define a fast / slow cityscape’.

"By shifting the tram line from its previously planned location, we create potential for new types of housing and commercial development," Blanchet said.

OMA will collaborate with landscape architect Coloco, sustainability adviser EGIS CONCEPT, engineering office EGIS, and real estate adviser CBRE, to work on the public space along the tramline.

OMA has also been working on a masterplan for 50,000 new homes in Bordeaux since 2010 for the Communauté urbaine de Bordeaux (CUB).
