Chatham Docks development in UK

Medway Council in the UK has approved Peel Land & Property’s outline planning application to transform 26 acres of brownfield land on part of Chatham Docks into a £650m mixed-use development.

The proposed Chatham Waters scheme will be developed into a 1.9 million ft² mixed use scheme.

The scheme will feature offices, residential buildings, student accommodation, a hotel, conference, leisure and events facilities, education facilities, retail units and an energy centre.

Medway Council leader Rodney Chambers said that project is a major step forward for the regeneration of Medway.

"Not only will it create thousands of jobs for residents in the near future, but it will provide opportunities for future growth and unrivalled facilities for residents and visitors alike to enjoy and benefit from," Chambers said.

Medway Council will now work with the developers to finalise legal agreements.

Peel development director James Whittaker said that the plan will regenerate new life into an area of the dockland and give the region an economic boost.

"We will now continue preparing detailed plans for the first phase and we hope to start building on the site next year," Whittaker said.

Indigo Planning, Planit IE Traffic Transport & Highway Consultancy and 5 Plus Architects are advising Peel on the scheme.

Prior to Chatham Waters, Peel developed major projects in the UK including Glasgow Harbour, the Trafford Centre shopping complex in Manchester and Media City at Salford Quays.
