The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has unveiled plans to construct the world’s tallest commercial tower as part of a 107,000m² business park expansion plan.

Planned to be built in the Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT) free zone, the business park and the tower, which are currently in the concept design phase, will cater to the needs of large and multinational businesses.

DMCC executive chairman Ahmed Bin Sulayem said the tower and the business park will attract companies to the free zone as demand grows.

"The initiative is designed to further strengthen Dubai’s position as the global hub for commodities trade and enterprise," Sulayem said.

Sulayem noted that over the past four years DMCC has attracted over 4,000 new firms to the Free Zone, of which 90% are new to Dubai.

Situated in the west of Dubai, the JLT free zone houses the 363m Almas tower, which features headquarters for DMCC and several other firms.

JLT currently features 65 mixed-use commercial and residential towers and more than 180 retail outlets.

Taipei 101 in Taiwan, formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Centre, was the tallest tower in the world until the unveiling of the 828m, 160-storey Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai in 2010.

Dubai is also home to the 414m Princess Tower, which was recognised as the world’s tallest residential building by the Guinness World Records in May 2012.
