Architectural firm Populous has been selected by the University of Arkansas in the US to design a new basketball practice facility, which is expected to cost between $20m and $25m.

The 70,000ft²-85,000ft² building will be situated south of Leroy Pond Road, between Bogle Park and the Gardens, directly across from Bud Walton Arena.

The facility will feature separate gyms for the men’s and women’s teams, locker rooms, a weight room, training facilities, offices, coaching suites, meeting rooms and a players’ lounge.

University of Arkansas vice chancellor and director of athletics Jeff Long said that the basketball practice facility will help the university to exceed the facilities of offered by competing institutions.

"Partnering with Populous allows us to utilise their extensive experience in the collegiate market to create a basketball practice facility that will aid us in recruiting and create a place for our men and women’s basketball student-athletes to call home," Long said.

The facility will be built to the minimum equivalent of LEED Silver or Green Globes Two Globes.

Populous, together with partner MAHG Architecture, is planning to break ground on the basketball training facility in 2013.

US-based CDI Constructors will serve as the general contractor for the project.

The new basketball practice facility is part of the university’s three athletics-related infrastructure projects that were approved for the construction by the Board of Trustees in September 2012.

The other two facilities include a student athlete success centre and a baseball and track indoor training facility.

All three facilities are expected to cost from $46m to $58m.
