The $1.2bn Santa Clara stadium in California, US, has been topped out as the highest pieces of structural steel were placed atop the 50-yard line of the stadium’s suite tower.

The new 68,500-seat stadium has been built near the Great America theme park off Highway 101 and features open pedestrian plazas, commercial community space and a team store.

Santa Clara stadium will incorporate photovoltaic panels, a green roof, public transit access, bicycle parking, walking path access from the San Tomas Creek Trail, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, building control systems and recycled construction materials.

The stadium will have more than 40,000 parking spaces located within a short walking distance and will be anchored on its corners by large entry plazas, creating open gathering places.

Built as a white painted steel structure, the stadium has been designed to allow views of the surrounding Silicon Valley area.

The main entry plaza, at the north-west corner of the stadium, will provide views of the playing field as well as a retail and community space.

Upon completion, the stadium will be used for various events including professional and college-level American football, as well as other sports, concerts and civic events.

US-based construction firms HNTB and Turner Construction designed and built the stadium, which is expected to be complete by autumn 2014.

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York recently revealed plans to build a ‘software-driven stadium’, which will allow fans to go online at an NFL game.
