Bishan Park

The National Parks Board (NParks) and the Public Utilities Board (PUB) of Singapore have completed a S$76m ($60m) upgrade of Bishan Park in Singapore’s Bishan neighbourhood.

The project’s upgrade work involved converting a 2.7km straight concrete drainage channel along the edges of Bishan Park into a 3km natural river.

Landscape architects Atelier Dreiseitl provided the design while US-based construction services provider CH2M Hill was the technical partner on the project.

The architects redesigned the 62ha of park space to accommodate the river system’s flows and pathways.

As part of the upgrade, three playgrounds, restaurants and a new lookout point were constructed using the recycled walls of the old concrete channel.

The refurbished garden now features a food outlet, a riverside gallery for outdoor performances, six event lawns for community events, a spa and two health centres.

The Kallang River-Bishan Park project intends to address the dual needs of water supply and flood management while creating spaces for people and nature in Singapore.

The winding course of the river will help slow the flow of rainwater so that downstream waterways have more time to drain, which in turn helps to prevent overflowing in times of heavy rain.

The water programme is a long-term initiative to transform the country’s water bodies beyond their functions of drainage and water supply into clean streams, rivers and lakes with new spaces for recreation.
