Changi Airport Group (CAG) in Singapore has unveiled concept plans to construct a new mixed-use terminal.

The new facility, named ‘Project Jewel’, will be built on the car park site facing Terminal 1.

Construction on the project is expected to commence soon, with planned completion in the mid-2020s.

Designed by a consortium of consultants led by Moshe Safdie, as well as Benoy and local architects RSP, the new facility will feature aviation and travel-related facilities, concessions, and leisure facilities.

The new facility will also feature a new multi-storey basement car park and, as part of the redevelopment, will also be expanded to enable more space for the arrival hall, baggage claim areas and taxi bays.

The facility will serve as a node connecting Terminals 1, 2 and 3, while enhancing inter-terminal connectivity, with further plans to offer a central facility for the 32,000 airport community.

Project Jewel is one of the major infrastructure projects being undertaken at the airport.

Other projects include Terminal 4, a larger facility which will be constructed on the old Budget Terminal site.

Terminal 4 is currently in the final stages of planning, with construction expected to commence by the end of 2013.

After completion, Project Jewel, along with Terminal 4, is expected to increase the airport’s handling capacity to 85 million passenger movements per year.

Changi Airport is working with CapitaMalls Asia on the concept and plans of Project Jewel, and the two parties are discussing the possibility of a joint venture partnership to develop and manage Project Jewel when it is complete.
