Six architects shortlisted to overhaul Flinders Street railway station in Melbourne

The Victoria Government in Australia has revealed six shortlisted designs from an international competition to overhaul Flinders Street railway station in Melbourne.

The shortlisted architects include Ashton Raggatt McDougall; John Wardle Architects along with Grimshaw; the team of Hassell and Herzog & de Meuron; NH Architecture; Eduardo Velasquez + Manuel Pineda + Santiago Medina; and Zaha Hadid Architecture & BVN Architecture.

In November 2011, the Victorian Government had launched the $1m competition to select the design to restore Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station.

Victoria Premier Denis Napthine said the competition was to finalise the design that encompassed not just Australian designs but the best ideas from around the world to restore and reinvigorate the whole 4.7ha station precinct.

"All six of these fantastic designs re-imagine Flinders Street as more than just a station; they are visions for a whole new riverside precinct for Melbourne.

"They are, each in their own way, bold statements that challenge us to think of Flinders Street as an integrated part of Melbourne and its surrounding areas, such as Federation Square, Southbank and the Arts Precinct."

Flinders Street Station is situated in the centre of Melbourne, between the linear edge of the Central Business District (CBD) and the Yarra River.

The existing Flinders Street Station building separates the city from the railway and from the river.

Architectural firms Hassell and Herzog & de Meuron have proposed a new barrel-vaulted roof for the station, while the Zaha Hadid Architects and BVN Architecture group intends to design a towering extension with a new hotel.

The group of John Wardle Architects + Grimshaw proposal includes the development of a network of bridges, underpasses, vaults and green space, while NH Architecture aims to float a glass lattice roof above the station’s additional concourses.

Ashton Raggatt McDougall Architecture has submitted plans to convert the old building into a school, while the team of Eduardo Velasquez, Manuel Pineda and Santiago Medina plan to create a garden over the roof of the station.

The government has invited the public to give their opinion on their favourite design and the feedback collection will continue until 5 August 2013, with the winners of the design competition announced three days later on 8 August.

"The existing building is one of Melbourne and Victoria’s most recognisable landmarks and the Coalition Government is committed to its preservation," Napthine said.

"At the same time, we need to consider designs that improve the transport function of the station and we will be asking people to take this into consideration when voting for the People’s Choice Award."
