The University of Sheffield in the UK has secured planning permission from Sheffield City Council to construct a new £81m engineering building on the Jessop East site.

The new 19,500m² facility will be built after the Edwardian extension of the old Jessop hospital site is demolished.

Designed by the UK-based architecture firm RMJM, the building will incorporate six floors, including one below ground, 19 teaching laboratories, a 400-seat lecture theatre, workshops, study areas and computer rooms.

Upon completion, the facility will house about 5,500 people at a time and RMJM’s design will connect the two important campus and city external spaces of Jessop West and St George’s.

The university had appointed RMJM as lead consultant architect to work in collaboration with project managers Turner & Townsend, cost consultants, ARUP consulting engineers and planning consultant Montagu Evans.

University of Sheffield pro-vice-chancellor professor and head of faculty of engineering Mike Hounslow said that final approval from the Secretary of State is still due and is required to start demolishing the Edwardian extension to the Jessop Hospital.

"This decision not only means we can soon start work on our fantastic new building, but also makes it possible for us to carry out an ambitious refurbishment programme to bring all our engineering estate up to the standard our staff and students deserve," Hounslow said.

Construction on the facility is anticipated to start in 2013 and complete by 2016 and the university expects to inject £44.5m into the local economy during the construction phase.
