Theatre Royal redevelopment in Scotland

Capita Symonds has started work on the £11.5m redevelopment of Theatre Royal in Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

The project will create a new entrance on the corner of Cowcaddens Road and Hope Street to provide spacious foyers and house new bars, box office, cloakrooms, toilet facilities and hospitality suites.

The development will also provide a new education suite and a new roof garden, which will offer views across the city.

As part of the project, lifts will be installed to improve access to all levels of the theatre.

Scottish Opera, which has owned the venue since 1974, has raised 85% of funding, while a campaign will be started later this year to raise the remaining funds.

Scottish Opera general director Alex Reedijk said, "Our vision is to open up the theatre to become a social hub; somewhere people can gather with friends for great coffee during the day, enjoy outstanding performances, learn about the performing arts, and discover the wonderful heritage of this beautiful theatre."

Funding for the development includes £3.96m from the Scottish government, £850,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, plus funding from Glasgow City Council, an array of Scottish and UK trusts and foundations, and support from individual donors.

Construction work will take around 18 months and the theatre will be closed for a three-month period in early 2014.

Scottish Government culture secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "This project will create a world-class venue in which to showcase Scotland’s globally-renowned culture and creativity as well as a lasting legacy for the city of Glasgow and the whole nation."

The project will complete by the time Glasgow hosts the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
