B2 residential tower in US

Forest City Ratner Companies (FCRC) has broken ground on the B2 residential tower at the Atlantic Yards Project in Brooklyn, New York, US.

Designed by SHoP Architects, the 32-storey B2 building will be 98m-high and feature 363 residential units.

FCRC will display one of the 930 modular chassis, which will be used to create the residential units.

Swedish construction firm Skanska recently secured a $117m contract to build the B2 residential tower, which is claimed to be the tallest modular building in the US.

The B2 building will be the first of 15 modular buildings to be constructed at the Atlantic Yard site at a cost of $4.9bn and is the first of three new residential towers planned around the Barclays Center.

The three buildings will provide about 1,500 residential units of which half will be used as affordable housing.

A structural steel system will house all the buildings and there will be 23 different unit types with 64 variations.

Over 60% of the construction work for the entire project will be completed off-site and assembled at the Brooklyn Naval Yard.

The construction of modules off-site is expected to help decrease costs while providing the same reliability as traditional building methods.

Construction of the B2 building is expected to start in December 2012, with completion scheduled for 2014.
